"A Little Journey to Macdonell House: 315-321 Pitt Street, Sydney" compiled by Chrissy Fletcher, December 2002

This history of Macdonell House begins in 1822. Using Sydney County Council Rate books, maps, land documents, Sands Directories, manuscripts and other sources, I have pieced together a continuous timeline of ownership of the land upon which Macdonell House is situated.
During my research for this project I came across a history of Macdonell House printed and distributed by the Trade Unions in 1922. Further research on the Labor Daily newspaper, printed at Macdonell House, gave me more detail on the building's purpose.
I find it amazing that Macdonell House has had such a continuous trade union connection, from its inception to the present day. If a building has a heart, then the heart of Macdonell House certainly lies with the union movement, borne out by the fact that five major tenants of the building in 2002, totally by chance, are union.
